The levels of achievement expected in math are unlikely to be achieved unless significant time is devoted to math instruction. Other parts of the curriculum such as science tend to suffer when accountability focuses so heavily on "the basics."
Our Adult Learning Committee has funded summer work by exemplary teachers to develop pacing guides and instructional materials which align the math and science curriculum, helping middle & high school science teachers apply and develop appropriate math concepts, and math teachers provide meaningful applications. Elementary efforts have helped teachers find the time to teach both math & science in an integrated plan.
A limited high stakes accountability system, a crowded curriculum, and concerns about getting high risk youngsters to grade level in basic skills conspire to crowd science and other "non-basics" out of the curriculum.
