How to increase reflective practices by teachers as they participate...

Issue Addressed:

How to increase reflective practices by teachers as they participate in the 4-week summer institute or the 8-day Alumni Institute.

Solution:

Teachers work in cooperative teams during inquiry-based activities in the institutes. Roles of groups are clearly defined and include "Observer". The Observer records and tracks the learning processes and group dynamics of that team, and helps to add a research approach to the experience of working within cooperative and inquiry-based settings. The Observer provides a second report from the team during reporting to the larger group -- the traditional Reporter focuses on the science content, leaving comments on process for the Observer. The teachers reflections in their journals have improved in quality since we started this practice.

Unresolved Issues:

How to help teachers sustain this reflective approach when they return to their classrooms.
