My name is Joan Gilbert; I'm a Collaborative Teacher with the D.E.S.E.R.T. (District-wide Emphasis on Science Education Reform in Tucson) Project in Tucson, AZ. We're in our 2nd year of a 5 year LSC grant and now starting to target our "cohort 1" schools with assessment. We'll start by conducting a 4 day summer Assessment Institute this June with about 175 teachers andadministrators , K-8. So - we're working on developing sessions that deal with all the issues presented and would like to spend a fair amount of time reading and discussing Paul Black's article and ideas and thoughts. We're also looking for help with those issues - how do we engage teachers in meanigful discussion and activities that support the need for a change in assessment practices - especially with student self-assessment at the forefront. How does formative aseessment practices enable both the teacher and student to decide on next steps, and how do we really know what students are thinking and understanding. And, of course, how do logistics be addressed and explored as many of our classroom teachers are extremely focused on high stakes testing. So - many questions at this time. Our assessment committee also has some ideas we can share, but we're novices at this point. Thanks much.
