Apprenticing Adolescents to Reading in Subject-Area Classrooms

author: Ruth Schoenbach, Jane Braunger, Cynthia Greenleaf, Cindy Litman
description: This paper discusses a professional development program for middle and high school social studies, math, English, and science teachers focused on "apprenticing" students to reading in those disciplines. Using this approach, students become more engaged and confident readers of challenging academic texts leading to a deeper involvement and understanding in the subject area itself. "In Reading Apprenticeship classrooms, teachers reconceptualize subject-area learning as an apprenticeship in discipline-based practices of thinking, talking, reading, and writing.... The curriculum includes more than just 'what we read.' It includes 'how we read' and 'why we read in the ways we do.'" The authors share several interesting classroom examples that describe the ways this approach is being used by teachers in several disciplines including chemistry and pre-algebra.
