Teacher Enhancement for Student Success (TESS)
School District: Fresno Unified School District
Summer Workshop Agendas
Introduction:
Numerous workshops have been offered through the TESS project during the summer of 1998. TESS focuses on professional development for all K-8th grade teachers in Fresno Unified School District in the areas of mathematics and science education. Each workshop offered this summer is summarized below.

Title: Performance-Based Assessment of Mathematics (PBAM) Scoring Institute
Dates(s): August 11-14
Time: 8 AM - 3 PM
Description: Middle school teachers participate in the calibration and scoring of the spring 1998 administration of the PBAM. Additional training covers the writing and analysis of prompts, and reflection on the impact of performance-based mathematics assessment in the classroom
Facilitators: Wendy DenBesten
Title: Fresno Pacific University Festivals: Math Festival
Dates(s): June 22-26
Time: 8 AM - 4 PM
Description: Middle School (Grades 6-9) teachers focus on enriching the curriculum through problem solving and historical vignettes, constructing and using manipulatives and mechanical puzzles, and calculators.
Facilitators: Jonathon Knaupp, Will Reimer and Richard Thiessen
Title: Fresno Pacific University Festivals: Math Perspectives

Time: 8 AM - 4 PM
Description: Middle School (Grades 6-9) teachers focus on problem solving, data sense, geometry and measurement concepts, and fraction concepts.
Facilitators: Dave Youngs, Ronald Koop, Judith Hillen, and Richard Thiessen
Title: Fresno Pacific University Festivals: Graphing Calculator Festival
Dates(s): July 20-24
Time: 8 AM - 4 PM
Description: Elementary and Middle School (Grades 6-9) teachers are engaged in mathematically worthwhile activities with the TI MathMate AOS and the TI Math Explorer, Math Explorer Plus, TI-80 and TI-83 calculators. Content areas covered include: numeration, operations, patterns, geometry, measurement, probability, statistics and graphing.
Facilitators: Fresno Pacific University Staff
Title: A Week with AIMS: Math Connections
Dates(s): June 29-July 3
Time: 8 AM - 4PM
Description: AIMS defines problem-solving as ìfinding the solution when no obvious path to the solution exists.î The solution lies beyond the mere use of algorithms and basic skills. Problem-solving students must intelligently and independently or collaboratively devise the pathway and then utilize basic skills and algorithms as needed to arrive at the solution.
Participants in these workshops problem solve in real-world contexts through investigations in science, by searching for and exploring number patterns, by solving meaningful puzzles, and by making mathematical discoveries.
Facilitators: AIMS Foundation Staff
Title: Science Embedded Assessment System (SEAS) Scoring Institute
Dates(s): June 22-July 3
Time: 8 AM - 4 PM
Description: Elementary school teachers participate in the calibration and scoring of the spring 1998 administration of the SEAS. Additional training covers the writing and analysis of prompts, and reflection on the impact of performance-based science assessment in the classroom.
Facilitators: Dave Calhoun, Patty Dahl, Janet Harding, and Ana Lopez
Title: Demonstration Summer School
Dates(s): June 9 -July 14
Time: 8 AM-3 PM
Description: Summer School focusing on the implementation of best practices in mathematics and science. Concurrent teacher and administrator institutes observe lessons, reflect on practices and related issues pertaining to the implementation of high quality mathematics and science programs at their school sites.
Facilitators: Laurel Ashlock, Carole Sarkisian-Bonard, Jerry Valadez, Kathy Woods and Kim Reistetter.
Title: Secondary Science Institute
Dates(s): June 16 - June 28
