VIPS Science Unit Training: Summer 1998

The Valle Imperial Project in Science, funded by the National Science Foundation, provides participating teachers with six hours of Level-One training for each science unit at their grade level. Teacher-trainers who have successfully taught the same unit in their classroom at least twice are the presenters. During Level-One training the teachers become familiar with the unit's materials and activities by doing them as their students will

  • learn effective classroom management and materials management strategies
  • learn the basic scientific content behind the phenomena investigated in each unit
  • learn effective questioning and assessment techniques and strategies

Science unit training is provided four times a year

(VIPS provided three summer workshops this year on August 18th, 20th and 21st. All three days followed the same schedule with some variation in presenters, as marked, and location.)

Science Unit Training:

  • KINDERGARTEN: Myself and Others - Room KB Judy Isaacson (8/18) Sarah Quinn (8/20, 8/21)
    Children look at themselves and their classmates and explore similarities and differences in such characteristics as height, eye color, skin color, and hand size

  • FIRST: Senses - Room 17 Laurie Thomson
    Children are provided with a variety of experiences that encourage them to use all their senses to more closely observe and describe objects and phenomena around them.

  • SECOND: Growing Things - Room 3 Elizabeth Molina
    While students grow their own bean plants, they observe the development of germinating seeds, measure and record growth and change, and design and conduct simple experiments to explore the factors that affect plant growth

  • THIRD: Sound - Room 6 Laura Dubbe (8/18, 8/20, 8/21) with Leona Lallier (8/18) with Wendy Pipkin (8/21)
    Students explore the characteristics of sound(vibration, pitch, and volume) and its transmission by using their bodies and making simple instruments.

  • FOURTH: Microworlds - Room 7 Carol Fisher
    Students become familiar with the use of various types of magnifiers and related equipment. They first observe common objects such as pennies and fabric, then move on to onion skin and live microscopic organisms.

  • FIFTH: Circuits and Pathways - Room 9 Sarah Quinn (8/18) Phil Iriving & Leona Lallier (8/20, 8/21)
    Students develop a basis for understanding electricity by exploring its properties in simple circuits. They use batteries, bulbs, motors, and wire to explore simple and parallel circuits, switches, fuses and the concepts of conductivity and electrical resistance.

  • SIXTH: Experiments with Plants - Room 11 Bill Rousseau (8/18) Royce Page (8/20, 8/21)
    Students design and conduct controlled experiments on variables of plant growth such as fertilizer, water, light, growing space and temperature. They also experiment with germination and tropism
