Science Connections
Summer Institute 1988

Montgomery County Public Schools
Rockville, Maryland

Institute Goals:

Teachers will:

  • Recognize the need to implement reform-based science instruction to enhance student achievement
  • Develop the skill and knowledge to implement reform-based science instruction
  • Increase science content knowledge

The institute consisted of eight days of training divided into two sessions. The location for both sessions was a centrally located county high school. The first session took place July 6-10. Participants were members of middle school (Grades 6,7,8) science departments from 10 of the county's 32 middle schools. The second session was conducted August 18-20. The training during the first five days emphasized pedagogy including the constructivist classroom, cooperative learning, and inquiry-based teaching; performance based teaching and assessment; technology applications, and the national and state science standards. During the second three-day session new science units and content from a revised middle school curriculum framework were introduced during grade level sessions.

Training Session Descriptions

Required:

Ins and Outs of Science Teaching

MSDE objectives are nothing to play around with, or are they? In this lively session, participants will become familiar with Maryland State Department of Education science outcomes and their indicators. Prerequisites: The ability to analyze, debate, and have fun.

Why am I teaching this?

A brief introduction to the National Science Education Standards (NSES). Includes an overview of the components of the standards, a look at changing emphases in science education and content standards from a developmental perspective.

Dig into Science!

Dig into your science curriculum with a fresh set of tools. Sometimes you find lessons right on the top - sometimes your students will find them - and sometimes you need to dig in a little deeper. Harvest the teachable moment and construct lessons right on track - Employ the 5-E's!

2 of these 3 are required:

Inquiring Minds Want to Know: Earth Science

Participants will evaluate their own questioning skills in inquiry-based instruction. Teachers will explore inquiry-based lessons by conducting an investigation which can be used in many of the Earth Science units that relate to density.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know: Life Science

Explore an inquiry-based lesson on the process of cell diffusion using gel cell models. Connections will be made to the MSDE Science learning outcomes and 5 E's model of lesson construction. Participants will receive teacher and student copies of the lesson and a lab report scoring tool.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know: Physical Science

Participants will evaluate their own questioning skills in inquiry-based instruction. Teachers will explore an inquiry-based lesson by conducting an investigation using pendulums.

2 electives:

Active Classroom

Working in pairs with a CD-ROM, you will experience a constructivist method of learning about constructivism in the middle school classroom. You will "visit" six classrooms and watch experienced teachers at work, practicing the teaching methods discussed here. There will be opportunities for you to reflect on your own and with others about teaching and learning as applied to this method.

SPECIALize Your Science Teaching

Feel like you're missing the target when teaching students with special needs or limited English proficiency? Come to this workshop and improve your A.I.M. We'll teach you to Accommodate, Individualize, and Modify for student success.

Net Research

Use of the internet to support the Event-Based Science Hurricane!, Thrill Ride!, and Earthquake! units will be demonstrated. Time will be provided to locate resources for units of participants' choice. Techniques for making the resources available will be discussed.

D.E.A.R. Time

This session is an opportunity to read, review, and discuss some of the readings you have received during the institute. All participants will read and discuss the article "Integrated Constructivism." Participants will be given time to read and discuss articles of their own choice related to constructivism, national and state standards, and inquiry teaching.

Product Development

Kitty Lou Smith, Director and Henry Milne, developer, Science and Technology Concepts for Middle School (SCT/MS), National Science Resources Center, Washington, D.C. will discuss the process of creating new curricular materials for national distribution.

Educational Reform: Ellen Nelson

Discuss with this former teacher and principal turned company CEO the current trends in educational reform. Preview a technology based science curriculum adopted by many states to replace textbooks.
