SMART Process Goals

  • To get a minimum of two kits in every classroom with every teacher having had professional development so that the unit is taught at the mechanical level or better.

  • To have a strong literacy connection built in to the curriculum through journals/notebooks and classroom libraries.

  • To build a teacher support base in all schools.

Institute Goals

  1. to develop a deeper understanding of the Insights modules and their connections to children's writing;

  2. to analyze children's work to determine what children understand within the context of both science and literacy;

  3. to provide strategies to utilize non fiction literature for exploration and discovery; and

  4. to begin provide experienced teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to co-facilitate and to facilitate SMART Process related professional development sessions.

As a result of your participation in the Summer Institute you will be expected to:

  • Participate in Experienced Teacher professional development and planning workshops during, after school and/or on weekends;

  • Co-facilitate and facilitate SMART Process professional development sessions (workshops, study/focus groups) during, after school and/or on weekends; and

  • Utilize your classroom as a professional development laboratory by providing opportunities for teachers in your school and from other schools to visit your classroom.

Grade specific sessions will focus on children's writing that results from module learning experiences. Work samples will be analyzed for concept development and for literacy. Participants will identify other opportunities for writing, techniques for expanding that writing and how the writing can be viewed within the context of both the English Language Arts and Science Performance Standards.
