WSMV Channel 4 is presenting a three part series on sciene education reform featuring the TSU-NSF Systemic Reform in Science Education Project. The three part series will be shown November 9, 10, and 11, on the 10:00 pm news broadcast. The series was developed by Dennis Ferrier, anchor reporter for Channel 4. The first part will focus on national problems in science education, including the results of the recent Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). The second and third parts of the series will focus on the TSU-NSF Hands-on Science Systemic Reform Project as being at the forefront nationally in addressing science education reform. The entire series will also include the implementation of the TSU-NSF Project in classrooms in the four school districts.

During the week of October 5th Channel 4 filmed

  • An interview with Dr. Barbara Nye, Executive Director, Tennessee State University Center of Excellence for Research and Policy on Basic Skills and NSF Project Principal Investigaotr.

  • Hands-on Science modules being used in classrooms in Sumner, Metro Nashville, Williamson and Rutherford County Schools.

  • Two science module training sessions in progress involving classroom teachers.

  • The TSU-Teacher Enhancement and Materials Management Center as science modules were prepared for distribution to area schools. Over 6,000 modules will be prepared by TSU this year.

  • Classrooms in Mesa Arizona were also filmed to report on their success with Hands-on Science as part of the TSU Reform model.

Dennis Ferrier is an investigative reporter and weekend anchor for Channel 4 News. He has taken courses at UCLA in science journalism and received six news Emmy nominations in 1998 - the most idiniviudal nominations this year.
