Partnership for Systemic Change Summer Workshop Agenda
Three to four days for about 7 hours a day How many teachers do you involve in your workshops? All teachers at a specific grade level are invited. It's there choice as to whether they would like to participate What are your major goals for your workshops in terms of content and pedagogy? (Just one or two paragraphs) Our major goal is to increase teacher content knowledge and to increase their comfort level with standards based math/science. We are also focusing on familiarity with a specific program. Are you offering professional development on specific curricula that you are hoping will be used in the classroom? "CLARISWORKS FOR KIDS" - A ONE DAY WORKSHOP This workshop is designed to help teachers gain a working knowledge of "ClarisWorks for Kids." Participants will 1) become familiar with software capabilities and make connections to the classroom; and 2) design science and mathematics activities for students utilizing charts, tables, and graphs.
ASSESSING STUDENT LEARNING The focus of this workshop will be designing districtwide, grade-level-specific assessments related to science modules. Participants will deepen their content knowledge and review inquiry-centered instruction as they engage in the tasks of creating appropriate assessments and designing inquiry-centered lessons to complement the modules, Strucres of Life and Human Body. TEACHING NEW SCIENCE CONCEPTS
Participants: K-8 teachers new to the district as well as staff with one or two years experience Date: August 19, 8:30am-3:30pm Location: Rahway Intermediate Schoo, Room 105 Stipend awarded based on participation: $100 New teachers will become familiar with Rahway's Science Framework and how it is aligned with neational standards and benchmarks as well as with New Jersey's Core Curriculum Content Standards. Participants will be provided with an overview of inquiry-centered instruction and strategies to assess student learning.
EVERYDAY MATHEMATICS: FOCUS ON A STANDARDS-BASED CURRICULUM Participants in this workshop will deepen their content knowledge of mathematics, their understanding of standards-based mathematics, and their ability to implement the Everyday Mathematics Program (or an equivalent program which will be adopted in spring of 1999) in their classrooms. Participants will teach the adopted curriculum or pilot the program in the coming year.
MATH IN CONTEXT: FOCUS ON A STANDARDS-BASED CURRICULUM This workshop is designed to provide an overview of the Math in Context curriculum and a detailed look at the units for Garde 7. Participants will discuss strategies for implementing the program and assessing student learning.
THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF SCIENCE IN PRE-K AND KINDERGARTEN This workshop is designed for teachers who wil be teaching the Insights Balls and Ramps module for the first time in the 1999-2000 school year. Questions stimulated by the observation and manipulation of materials in the kit will be investigated by participants. participants will deepen their content knowledge, increase their skill in using inquiry-centered instruction and develop assessments of student learning to use in implementing the module.
MOTION AND DESIGN (STC)EXPLORING NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE MATERIALS Participants: Grade 7 and 8 Teachers Dates: July 12, 13, 14, 15, 8:30am-3:30pm Location: Linden Academy of Science and Technology (pending approval) Stipend awarded based on participation in all sessions: $400 This workshop will provide hands-on experience with new middle school science materials. Participants will focus on how the content of the materials matches the district's framework and the state science standards, and how the materials can be modified to serve the needs of the district science curriculum.
THINKING AND WRITING IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE Performance assessment in mathematics and science increasingly requires students to formulate written responses to explain their thinking processes, but that written expression is extremely difficult for students. This workshop will provide models for how to use writing to enhance student understanding of science and mathematics. Strategies will focus on sensible and time-efficient ways to incorporate writing into your math and science classes.
