TAPESTRIES Summer Workshop Agenda

submitter: TAPESTRIES

How long do your workshops last?

Our workshops last 2 weeks for each grade level. We ran 3 sessions at two different universities. All total, we had six 2-week sessions this summer.

How many teachers do you involve in your workshops?

257 teachers participated in our Summer Institute this year.

What are your major goals for your workshops in terms of content and pedagogy? (Just one or two paragraphs)

In terms of content, TAPESTRIES' major goal for the summer '99 institute was scientific processes and content inherent in the adopted science materials that teachers use in their own classrooms. Teachers worked through the activities of the hands-on materials in their adopted curriculum. Each of these activities followed a 5-E learning cycle approach in which students were engaged in an activity that tapped into their prior knowledge. They then explored science phenomena, concepts were explained, and opportunities to extend the learned concepts were provided and an evaluation of the activity was given. (teacher science content knowledge was extended beyond the level presented in the curricula.) Support Teachers, university scientists, and science educators provided leadership during this process.

In terms of pedagogy, teachers participated in sessions on constructivism, graphic organizers, concept mapping, cooperative learning, Private Universe (student misconceptions), embedded assessment, "Questioning Embedded Assessment," and safety in the classroom.

Are you offering professional development on specific curricula that you are hoping will be used in the classroom? If so, which curricula are you using?

Yes. We are using FOSS, STC, and Scholastic Science Place.
