- Oliver Wendell Holmes How long do your workshops last? ONE WEEK How many teachers do you involve in your workshops? 60 What are your major goals for your workshops in terms of content and pedagogy? (Just one or two paragraphs) Content: The Invitations to Inquiry Institute featured the pedagogy of inquiry by using concepts in light and color as the vehicle. Pedagogy: Our goal was for institute participants to recognize the tools of inquiry - the process skills - their importance and how those skills are also necessary for learning in other curricular areas. Additionally, we hope teachers will understand that using inquiry is one way to assist students who are grappling with misconceptions. A variety and range of lesson activities were provided to help teachers identify them along a continuum beginning with guided inquiry to student generated questions and investigations. Finally, it was important for teachers to have a personal inquiry experience in order to understand both its value and the steps needed to support inquiry style learning. Are you offering professional development on specific curricula that you are hoping will be used in the classroom? If so, which curricula are you using? see above
Welcome to Invitations to Inquiry!
June 21-25, 1999 Please join us for muffins and coffee each morning at 8:00 a.m. so our sessions can begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided each day. You will be able to earn a $300 stipend for attending the entire program or 30 hours of district professional development credit. We are excited about the plans taking shape for a week of exploring inquiry, hands-on activities and collegial conversation around best practices. You'll receive a copy of Primary Science: Taking the Plunge edited by Wynne Harlen along with some other materials which we hope will be useful. Your principal will be invited to join us on Tuesday to see inquiry in action and to join us for lunch for informal discussions. On Wednesday and Thursday, we are delighted to have two guest presenters from the Exploratorium who will provide lessons on light and color as vehicles for inquiry learning. There will be time to work on a specific unit or lesson of your choice from your grade level materials. So be sure to keep the teachers guide handy or make copies of the pertinent pages. Be prepared to bring it to the institute on Thursday. If your plans change, please notify us right away. Again, welcome. We look forward to working together. Regards,
