INQUIRES Summer Workshop Agenda

submitter: "INQUIRES" -- Inquiry, Quality Investigations and Reform in Science
published: 09/09/1999
posted to site: 09/10/1999
How long do your workshops last?

2 weeks

How many teachers do you involve in your workshops?

25

What are your major goals for your workshops in terms of content and pedagogy? (Just one or two paragraphs)

Teacher Enhancement in science for 6-7-8-9 grade science teachers using a replacement unit model.

Are you offering professional development on specific curricula that you are hoping will be used in the classroom? If so, which curricula are you using?

Yes. STC Experiment with Plants, Prime Science C (7th Grade) and State of Michigan (DOE) materials: "Chemistry that Applies" (8th Grade) and "Food Energy and Growth" 6th Grade

Comment regarding Prime Science: There were many challenges regarding laboratory design and the investigations themselves. The results of the activities often produced little data that could be used to support the learning goals. We will not continue to consider these materials as replacement units. The teachers participating in the workshop were frustrated with their results and said that to follow the section of Prime called the "Green Machine" would frustrate their students as well.
