Chicago Secondary Mathematics Improvement Project

How long do your workshops last?

Our workshops serve a range of purposes from curriculum implementation to deepening teacher leaders understanding of theoretical questions underlying math reform. They either are 15 hours (3 hours per day for 1 week) or 30 hours (6 hours per day for 1 week).

How many teachers do you involve in your workshops?

We originally offered 13 workshops but have eliminated 2 due to lack of enrollment. So we are planning 11 workshops with an average of 10-12 teachers per workshop.

What are your major goals for your workshops in terms of content and pedagogy?

Our LSC is based on use of the Interactive Mathematics Program. We encourage teachers who have not decided to teach a reform curriculum to participate so that they might begin to imagine other ways of thinking about mathematics teaching and learning.

Each of the workshops this year is being led by a pair of teacher leaders. This is a key element in our plan for institutionalization.

Intensive Introduction to IMP

This workshop will provide the opportunity to observe a morning classroom at Manley High School led by an experienced IMP teacher. Afternoon workshops will cover patterns, probability, algebraic concepts And graphing based on units from IMP.

June 19 – 30 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Baker’s Choice

Based on a real-world application, students learn systems of equations, Inequalities and linear programming. This material is suitable for sophomores or juniors.

July 5 – 7 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Constructivism

Investigate how students build knowledge. Discuss research on learning that can help us reach students.

July 10 - 14 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Introduction to use of graphing calculators in Algebra 1

TI-83's will be used as we investigate using lists, tables, equation solver, graphing and curve fitting to solve interesting problems.

July 10 - 14 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Assessment

Work to develop questions that explore students' understanding of the concepts and methods of mathematics. Share ideas for building student habits of self-assessment. Examine these and other issues using student work.

July 17 - 21 TBD
Advanced topics with the TI-83 Graphing Calculator

Advanced features of the TI-83 will be explored in the context of interesting problems including matrices, programming, derivatives, financial functions and statistical topics.
