Mathematics: Applications and Reasoning Skills (MARS)

How long do your workshops last?

One week per session (5 days at 6 hours/day plus time for lunch). We run these sessions at three different times throughout the summer for current elementary teachers, with a modified version for brand-new hires (that's the fourth offering).

How many teachers do you involve in your workshops?

400 current elementary teachers and 200 brand-new hires.

What are your major goals for your workshops in terms of content and pedagogy?

The sessions for current elementary teachers involve teachers who have had at least 60 hours of project-supported professional development thus far. Our goal is to advance both their mathematical content knowledge (particularly in the topics of statistics and data analysis, geometry, and rational numbers) and their pedagogical knowledge (particularly in terms of interpreting student work -- documenting and analyzing students' conceptual understanding).

Are you offering professional development on specific curricula that you are hoping will be used in the classroom? If so, which curricula are you using?

Not as a primary focus. One day is spent on use of Investigations in Data , Number and Space. The remainder of the time focuses on addressing mathematical content and pedagogical expectations refering to the school system's project-developed curriculum guide (sometimes accessing McGraw-Hill commercial materials).

Are you using specific professional develoment materials?

Assume you mean such as DMI. No, we are not using any of these.

General Information

Workshop Objectives
  • To continue to provide quality staff development to increase competence and excellence among our teachers.
  • To increase teachers' knowledge of content and pedagogy in order to improve mathematics instruction.
  • To provide teachers a workshop environment that encourages them to examine their own instructional practices and share with others.
