2001 Summer Workshop Summary

How long do your workshops last?

Our Mathematics Summer Institute is a week-long, 30 hour class; this year it was held June 11-15. It instructed by Math Teacher Leaders (MTLs) and master teachers in the district, however it was a collaborative planning effort between the MTLs, classroom teachers and consultants (Tom Rowan from Maryland, Anna Suarez from NSF, myself and Yvonne Grant from Connected Mathematics).

How many teachers do you involve in your workshops?

We have three different levels depending on teacher needs. Most of the participants are from within the district however, we do invite a limited number of teachers from neighboring districts. Our numbers are as follows: * Level 1 (K-5): An Introduction to Investigations; 28 people * Level 2 (K-5): Exploring the Mathematics in Investigations; 31 people * Connected Mathematics (6-8): 24

Agenda for TREASURmath Summer 2001 Workshop

Introduction to Investigations The purpose of this 30-hour course is to familiarize teachers with the components, content and pedagogical focus of Investigations by engaging in activities (both whole group and grade-level specific) from their curriculum. An emphasis will also be placed on reflective teaching, analyzing student work and mathematics content.

This course is recommended for new teachers and teachers who want to learn more about Investigations.

Exploring the Mathematics in Investigations The purpose of this 30-hour course is to extend participant's knowledge of Investigations by focusing on the mathematical strands (content) emphasized in these programs. Participants will engage in grade-level specific activities as well as activities across the grade levels in order to gain a better sense of the progression of the content strands. An emphasis will also be placed on reflective teaching: planning lessons, analyzing student working and making instructional decisions.

This course is recommended for teachers who have been implementing Investigations and feel comfortable with the components of the program. (This is an extension of the Summer Institute offered during the summer of 2000).

Connected Mathematics (CMP) This 30-hour course is recommended for all 6-8th grade teachers regardless of their experience with CMP. The course will be developed to meet the needs of the participants by using a whole group and grade-level specific format.

Newer teachers will be introduced to the components, content and pedagogical focus of CMP by engaging in activities from their curriculum. An emphasis will also be placed on reflective teaching, analyzing student work and mathematics content. Teachers who feel comfortable with the components of CMP will focus on the mathematical strands (content) emphasized in these programs as well as issues that occur while teaching the program. An emphasis will also be placed on reflective teaching: planning lessons, analyzing student working and making instructional decisions.

Awards: Participants will receive a stipend of $270. Participants also have the option of purchasing 2 hours of ASU graduate credit (an outside assignment will be required).
