Missouri-Iowa Science Co-op Project
2001 Summer Workshop Summary
How long do your workshops last?
We are implementing our 40-hour Science Co-op Project Summer 2001 Workshop at
eight sites in Missouri and Iowa between May 29 and June 29. Workshop
content is consistent but schedules vary from four days to two weeks,
depending on teacher preferences and local school district schedules. The
summer workshops are part of a full-year professional development cycle of
more than 65 hours.
How many teachers do you involve in your workshops?
The number of teachers at each site varies from 30 to 150. The total number
is approximately 500.
What are your major goals for your workshops in terms of content and pedagogy?
The Science Co-op Project intends to facilitate local self-sustaining
planning for district-level K-6 science programs that emphasize kit-based,
standards-based science inquiry. During the five-year project each teacher
will focus on content in the life sciences, physical sciences, and
earth/space sciences. Consistent with these project goals, each teacher in
our Summer 2001 Workshop is supported in planning a series of science lessons
that involve adapting one science kit and reflecting this planning by beginning the development of a "teacher resource book" that
shows how to make science lessons/activities
- connect to other areas of the curriculum (reading writing, math, language arts, and technology)
- reflect relevant local, state, and national standards and assessments
- utilize student preconceptions take advantage of non-kit resources
shows how to implement inquiry teaching by means of a modified learning cycle that consists of
- an "engage" component
- an "explore" component
- a "consolidate" component
- an "assess" component
selecting from a menu of 20 two-hour interactive television sessions
at least eight sessions that are relevant to the science content and pedagogy
associated with the kit adaptation and TRB development (Teachers participate
in these sessions throughout the up-coming academic year).
Are you offering professional development on specific curricula that
you are hoping will be used in the classroom? If so, which curricula are
you using?
Each teacher selects one STC, FOSS, or Insights kit for each summer workshop.
The selection is based on the developing district K-6 science program,
relevant standards, and teacher preference.
