K-5 PRIME Mathematics Project
2001 Summer Workshop Summary

How long do your workshops last?

Our workshop involves one full week of intensive work with senior staff mentors, 8-2 x 5 days, with time for grade-level planning from 2-4 daily.

How many teachers do you involve in your workshops?

332 teachers out of 337 are attending this summers' sessions. New hires and teachers unable to come (due to surgery, etc.) are required to do make-up sessions during September and October.

What are your major goals for your workshops in terms of content and pedagogy?

The overriding theme of this summer's work is the development of number and computation sense. Content sessions each day are related to this theme and include sessions on counting as a base for operations; computation and algorithms (includes content analysis of DMI videos); groups, arrays, and factors; partitioning and combining; comparing fractions; part-to-whole fractions / percents / decimals. Pedagogical sessions focus on the number modules in the K-5 Investigations series, which we are phasing in this year. Sessions focused on teacher completion, role-teaching, and analysis of key Investigations and related videos for each unit, as well as on related student assessment strategies. Overall, our interest is in helping teachers better elicit / listen to, understand, and use children's thinking as the basis for instructional decisions in mathematics. Our three PRIME Classroom Strategies of using good tasks and good questions to engage students in a balanced program of mathematics study provide a unified theme for this on-going effort. Teachers had previously worked on district committees to develop grade-level, 1-page curriculum plans for each year and 4-quarter plans of major topics to be addressed. These are now run back to back withInvestigations sessions to be addressed each grading period highlighted.

Are you offering professional development on specific curricula that you are hoping will be used in the classroom? If so, which curricula are you using?
