The purpose of this article is to share our journey to improve mathematics teaching and learning in a low income, high minority border district. The Gadsden Mathematics Initiative (GMI) began in 2001 with a grant from the National Science Foundation as a partnership between the Gadsden Independent School District and New Mexico State University. The goal of the Initiative is to build a stronger K-8 mathematics program to improve student learning. The five-year project provides Gadsden teachers and administrators with a variety of professional development opportunities and instructional materials designed to improve mathematics learning.
