Many thanks to Julian Weissglass from the Partnerships for (Systemic) Reform to Improve Mathematics Education project and Carol Fry Bohlin from the STEPPS project for submitting this paper. This article, written by Julian Weissglass as an opinion piece that appeared in Education Week as part of their "Lessons of a Century" series, discusses the differences between traditionalist and progressive approaches to curriculum. Weissglass argues that "traditionalists structure schools to prepare students for filling roles in society--not for transforming it ... progressives see society as needing improvement and the schools as serving the function of helping students become thinking citizens who can contribute to creating a more just society."
