In our D.E.S.E.R.T. project, K-8, in Tucson, we've organized study groups based on a critical friends process using a protocol to look at student work. Our goals are to establish a professional learning community at school sites by facilitating groups of teachers looking at student work as an impetus for dialogue, and to learn how many different types of student work inform our teaching as formative assessment. Teachers partcipating in the study groupa have a choice of receiving salary increment credit or a stipend from the Project.Groups of 6-8 teachers have formed at a few of our cohort schools in the first year of their particpation, and many schools will use the critical friends process as further support for teachers in year 2 of the Project process. Please let me know if you would like further details - the video we use, articles for support and the protocol we've adapted from other projects.
