The following articles were written about the Indiana Math Initiative. We were unable to gain copyright permission to post them in their entitety so they are summarized below:
- New IU center will help FWCS teachers demystify math, The Fort Wayne Sentinel, May 9, 1997.
- Mathematics center to help educators, The Bloomington Herald-Times, May 6, 1997.
- Indiana University receives $2 million for math center, The Gary Post Tribune, May 6, 1997.
These three articles announce the beginning of Indiana University's Center for Mathematics Education. The Center will team with a previous network of 12 urban Indiana School Districts, directed by Barbara Moore, to launch the Indiana Math Initiative. William Frascella, PI of this LSC, says that the Center has three goals:
- "To provide high-quality in-service programs for teachers in the K-12 community
- To offer comprehensive programs for teachers in training
- To develop a technological infrastructure that will link the resources of IU with the K-12 schools in the state."
These articles also highlight other goals of is partnership:
- to help teachers demystify math
- to emphasize how math relates to other subjects and contexts, and focuses on problem solving.
- to emphasize hands-on tools in learning math.
