Fads and Fireflies: The Difficulties of Sustaining Change

author: John O'Neil
description: This interview with educator Larry Cuban looks at Cuban's assertion that "school reforms are a product of the cultural, political, and economic forces of their times." Cuban maintains that it is difficult to sustain schools reforms because schools are so vulnerable to ouside pressures and "fads." Cuban also suggests characteristics of reforms that have nonetheless promoted lasting change, as well as characteristics of reforms that haven't worked. This interview is from the April 2000 issue of "Educational Leadership," which focuses on the topic of sustaining change.
