Assessing Students' Mathematics Learning

author: Ilene Kantrov
description: In considering national and statewide tests, some critical questions to ask are, "What kind(s) of information do these tests provide?" and, "For what purpose(s) is each test well-suited?" This paper explains the different kinds of tests used to assess mathematics and raises questions concerning the compatibility of student assessments with the content and approaches to teaching embodied in standards-based curricula.
