State High School Exit Exams: A Baseline Report

description: This 100 page report details a three year study conducted by the Center on Education Policy looking at the impact and influence of high school exit exams. They report on case studies from five states - Alaska, Georgia, Indiana, New York, and Ohio - chosen to represent a diversity of size, geographic regions, racial/ethnic makeup, and testing approaches. Four major questions addressed are: "Why are so many states adopting exit exams?...What are the impacts of exit exams on students?...What are these exams like?...What major challenges do states face in implementing exit exams?" The intent of the report is to "help policymakers adopt policies that will lead to increased student learning, rather than to higher dropout rates or other negative consequences." This report should be of interest to those in states that use or are considering the use of high school exit exams.
